Construction Plant & Equipment Courses (including JCB type machinery)

Plant and machinery courses are carried out in small groups so that you receive plenty of individual attention, supplemented by course materials. We work closely with the Health and Safety Executive to ensure that our materials reflect current safe working practices.

All our land based training courses are approved by the Lantra Awards scheme and all our plant and machinery courses are approved for accreditation with CITB.

Who should attend:-

Novice Operators for Foundation Training; Experienced Workers for Refresher/Assessment

What is the course aim:-

A module credit will be awarded to the candidate for the successful completion of these modules. Instruction, training and/or assessment of mandatory modules MO1 and MO2 must be undertaken and the CITB Health & Safety Test must be successfully completed (after appropriate training) for the issue of the Specialised Plant and Machinery Operations Intermediate Certificate or the Lantra Certificate of Competence on successful completion, whichever is applicable.

Course Objectives:-

  • Configure the lorry loader and carrier vehicle for site and road travel
  • Manoeuvre the carrier vehicle into position in order to carry out the lifting of various loads

  • Select, check and use correct lifting gear for the lifting of various loads

  • Load a vehicle in accordance with industry practices

Skid Steer Loaders Training

Course Objectives

  • Identify the basic construction and components, and the purpose and use of all controls and gauges.
  • Identify and comply with manufacturers instructions in accordance with the operator’s handbook, other information sources and applicable legislation.
  • Carry out all pre-use and running checks.
  • Set the skid steer for site and road travel.
  • Travel over differing types of terrain, including rough undulating ground, both in a loaded and unloaded state.
  • Travel up and down substantial inclines in a loaded and unloaded state.
  • Manoeuvre in confined areas using forward and reverse direction, in a loaded and unloaded state.
  • Form stockpiles and ramps of various materials.
  • Load various types of materials into receptacles, i.e. vehicles, hoppers, skips etc.
  • Clean and level different types of materials.
  • Place the skid steer in an out-of-service condition.
  • Explain the loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter.

Who are the courses for?

Anyone who uses or will be using a skid steer shovel in the land-based industries or construction industry.

Duration / Format

Novice operators – 3 days
Experienced operators – varying depending on experience

Instructor / Machine / Trainee Ratio

1 instructor : 2 machines : 4 trainees or
1 instructor : 1 machine : 2 trainees

Equipment Required for CPCS Course and Test

  • Serviceable skid steer that meets current legislation, fitted with a general purpose excavating bucket.
  • A vehicle for loading into, which must have a capacity at least equivalent to 4 full bucket loads of the loader being used for the test.

NB trainees cannot be trained/assessed for operating the loading vehicle during the skid steer loader course

  • A bank or mound of material which can be excavated.
  • An area of ground, minimum area half hectare (1 acre), clear of hazards which must include:
    • uneven, rough terrain.
    • a slope(s) not less than 18% (1:5.5) incline having sufficient manoeuvring room at the top and bottom.
    • a straight run of at least 10 metres in length

    NB Written permission from the employer/landowner must be provided stating that the training area is able to be used for the purposes intended and is free from all underground services.

  • Suitable material for marking out  eg sand, lime or marker spray
  • Cones/Barriers to set up an exclusion zone and create restrictions for manoeuvring.
  • Operator instruction book for all machinery and attachments
  • First Aid equipment complying with the Health and Safety (First Aid) Reg 1981

CPCSAA40 - Slinger / Signaller Training

Course Objectives

  • Identification marks, test certification and thorough examination of documents
  • Identifying load weights and centres of gravity
  • Characteristics of lifting accessories including effects of angles and attaching methods
  • Selection of lifting accessories including uniform load method
  • Following method statements and other instructions, including preparation of work area
  • How to sling various loads including balanced, unbalanced and loose
  • How to deliver signals to the lifting appliance operator using different forms of communication
  • How to lift and accurately place various loads including test lifts, to and from confined and “blind” areas
