WJ - Water Jetter Training
Introduction:-
The Association has approved this practical two day course for drain and sewer cleaning using high pressure water which may be run by any company or training organisation whether they are members or non-members. These companies must, however, run the courses to the requirements of the Association.
The Association award a "Certificate of Training Achievement" to those attending the course providing:
- The trainees pass the test at the end of the course
- The training provider meets all the rules laid down by the Association for running the course.
- The qualifications of the instructors must show that they are competent to carry out the work
The course is based entirely on the Associations "Code of Practice for the use of High Pressure Water Jetting Equipment". It is a practical course containing hands on training with the equipment together with some lecture room subjects. The course is designed to give the trainee knowledge of a safe way in which to use the equipment. It gives information on safe entry into confined spaces but makes no attempt to provide full instruction on the safety procedures involved. It is assumed that trainees would have already been trained in the procedures if their future duties require them.
The Purpose of the Training Manual
This training manual lays down guidance for instructors who wish to conduct the Associations course "High Pressure Water Jetting Drain and Sewer Cleaning". The manual contains a number of instructional aids:
- Instructors Notes - Objectives and Training Points: These are headlines and key points that must be covered by the instructor in the sequence shown on these sheets. They give guidance for all classroom instruction and all practical instruction, demonstration and practical sessions.
- Training Aids: This column is left blank for the instructor to fill in for himself. He should make notes on which training aids are needed against each section and/or paragraph. For Example: OHP viewfoil "accessories", dump gun, hose showing deterioration or see AHPWJC Code of Practice Section...... etc...
- Course Notes: Course Notes on some of the talks given in the classroom sessions are provided. These should also be used as handouts for the trainees.
- Illustrations: These should be used for making viewfoils for an overhead projector, providing visual aids for instruction sessions. They should also be photocopies and used as trainee handouts.
- Questionnaire: This is a multiple choice questionnaire giving trainees the choice of three answers to the question. The questionnaire serves also as a marking sheet for the instructors and as a record of the trainees progress.
- Practical Exercises and Exercise Marking Sheets: These describe the exercises that must be carried out by trainees at the end of the practical sessions. The trainees are marked on their performance using the exercise marking sheets.
The Objectives of the Course
At the end of the course trainees should:
- Have a detailed knowledge of all the hazards associated with water jetting.
- Understand the items of water jetting equipment as used for drain and sewer cleaning.
- Understand the different control systems that are in use including pressure safety relief devices.
- Have a clear understanding of the special needs for maintenance inspection and testing of high pressure equipment on a regular basis.
- Understand the potential hazards of incorrect connection of high pressure hoses, guns and lances.
- Have a detailed knowledge of the nature of water jetting injuries and the correct action to take in the event of an accident.
- Understand the requirement, for personal protective clothing and equipment and it's limitations.
- Understand the safety procedures necessary when water jetting operations take place on or near a public highway, footpath or other area where other persons may be nearby.
- Have a detailed knowledge of the Associations "Code of Practice, for the use of High Pressure Water Jetting Equipment".
